1927 U.S. Gold Double Eagle Coin, Saint-Gaudens Design, Mint State Condition, Philadelphia Mint

A 1927 U.S. Gold Double Eagle coin in Mint State condition, with no wear and moderate luster. Minted at the Philadelphia mint, with no mintmark. This listing is for the exact coin pictured and features the iconic "Saint-Gaudens" design by acclaimed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle gets its name from the coin's designer, the internationally-renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. President Teddy Roosevelt specifically requested Saint-Gaudens' help in redesigning the nation's coinage, but the double eagle denomination was the only one he finished before succumbing to cancer. His design of Lady Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, lit by the rays of the rising sun behind her, is regarded as one of the most beautiful and iconic designs of U.S. coins.

Up until 1933, when President Franklin Roosevelt demonetized all gold coins, the U.S. produced gold coins in denominations ranging from $1 up to $20. Each denomination had a name, with an "eagle" representing the $10 coin, "double eagle" for the $20, and half eagle for the $5 coin. This double eagle coin was worth $20, and contains an amount of gold equivalent to roughly $20 at the time it was minted. With the price of gold now at over $1000 an ounce, a modern double eagle coin would weigh about 32mg.
