Custom Listing for El - Caesar/Antony 20%

An ancient silver denarius struck by the famous Roman general Marc Antony in 43 B.C., during the Roman Civil War. This coin measures 18mm in diameter, weighs 3.6 grams, and is made of silver. The coin has moderate wear, a slightly off-center strike, a small banker's mark on the reverse, and a dark, original patina.

This coin was produced just after the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. by the Roman Senate, during the civil war that engulfed the late Roman Republic. Antony was a close ally and friend of Caesar's - in the year following Caesar's murder, Antony mounted a PR campaign to celebrate Caesar as a martyr and turn the Roman people against the Senate and the chief assassins, Brutus and Cassius. Antony soon succeeded in taking power in Rome, forming a temporary (and ill-fated) alliance with Caesar's adopted heir and grand-nephew, Octavian.

This coin has great historical significance, as it was produced in the midst of the most chaotic years of the Roman Republic, shortly before it would fall and become the Roman Empire, led by Octavian as Emperor Augustus. This coin also shows Antony's attempts to link himself to Julius Caesar in the eyes of the Roman public, by producing coins that featured both himself and Caesar.

The obverse side of the coin features Julius Caesar, wearing a laurel crown, while the reverse features Mark Antony (with a strong jawline).
