Septimius Severus reigned from 193 to 211 AD. Born in the Roman province of Africa, Severus first rose to power as a successful military commander. He capitalized on a period of civil unrest following the assassination of Emperor Pertinax (his ally) in 193 AD, defeating his rivals to secure the throne. 

Severus' reign was marked by significant military reforms and an autocratic style of rule. He increased the power and pay of the army, making them loyal to the emperor rather than the Senate, thus consolidating his control. His reign laid the foundation for the continued military dominance of Rome, but also set a precedent for political instability due to his emphasis on military loyalty over civilian governance (and a weakened economy due to military overspending). Severus died of illness in 211 AD while leading the army in Britain, and was succeeded to the throne by his sons Caracalla and Geta.
